Tips To Save Energy During Summer In Your Metal Building

Tips To Save Energy During Summer In Your Metal Building

Do you own a steel building, or are you planning to invest in prefab buildings? If yes, consider smart choices to reduce your power bills. During summer, the energy consumption of cooling systems increases drastically to combat heat. Whether you live in Florida, Hawaii, or another tropical part of the country, here are some tips to make your metal structure energy efficient.

10 Ways To Reduce Energy Bills In Your Metal Building This Summer

Interior

1. Insulation

Insulation creates a heat barrier. It reduces the flow of heat from inside to outside and vice-versa. It helps regulate indoor temperature. It increases the effectiveness of the HAVC system and lowers energy bills.

Did you know most heat loss (about 25%) occurs through the roof? Insulating your attic space is crucial. It helps keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

2. Ventilation

An adequate vent system allows hot air to escape outside and prevents heat buildup. It also brings fresh air inside, creating a balance between indoors and outdoors, reducing the frequent need for air conditioning.

It prevents rusting and mold growth and increases structural strength by reducing condensation. You can strategically place vents inside metal prefab buildings. For instance, one vent can be placed above the garage door and another on the opposite side of it to increase airflow.

There are two types of vents: active (runs on power) and passive (does not require power). You can select one based on your needs and your external surroundings.

3. HAVC System

Using AC in a part of the building that is not in use can lead to extra energy bills and is a waste of energy. Install HVAC in a way that suits your daily habits and activities. Do not forget to clean the system. With time, filters may get clogged and will take more energy to perform.

4. LED Lights

LEDs come in various colors, shapes, sizes, and designs. They give maximum brightness and consume less power. LEDs also generate little to no heat, so the interior can be well-lit and remain cool for longer.

5. Smart Thermostat

It allows you to create a customized schedule that syncs with your daily routine. It has a learning algorithm that understands temperature preferences and patterns over time. You can even remotely control and access it via smartphone.

6. Energy Star Appliances

It is a government-backed program (established in 1992) that promotes design that uses less energy and saves money. The program offers products and appliances that meet strict, specific energy efficiency standards set by the EPA.

Did you know energy-star-rated products such as LEDs can save at least 75% on energy and last 25 times longer? They also have less impact on nature.

EXTERIOR

7. Reflective Paint

It redirects sunlight away from the building, keeping the roof cooler. When applied to a steel building, it reduces heat absorption and shields the structure from UV rays. There are three types: water-based, solvent-based, and epoxy-based. It reduces surface temperature and contributes to energy efficiency.

8. Light Color Roof

For metal buildings, opt for light-colored roofs and exteriors. They reduce heat absorption and help increase the metal structure’s efficiency. Opt for a darker color for heating the interior.

9. Seal Inside Out

Sealing metal buildings helps to get rid of draft buildup, which lets cold or hot air inside when you want the opposite. The easiest way to remove the draft is to seal them with waterproof sealant, which is available at your local hardware store.

Is there any other way to bring natural light and block the sun? Yes, add window films and shades like awnings to block direct sunlight while still allowing natural light to enter. Well-designed doors and windows can also help reduce energy consumption effectively.

10. Smart Landscaping

Your exterior landscaping can also improve your energy efficiency. Place shrubs and trees strategically around metal prefab buildings. The greenery creates coolness and shade by blocking direct sunlight.

Go for deciduous trees, as they provide shade in summer and shed leaves in winter, making way for sunlight. Some examples of deciduous trees are apple, oak, maple, walnut, maidenhair, and fig trees.

Bonus: Energy Audit

It helps you find out how to make a steel building energy efficient by identifying gaps. It can help save energy, reduce operational costs, and boost the value of your property. An energy auditor conducts it by inspecting the structure and asking you about energy consumption. You might be missing out on saving thousands of dollars yearly. So, it is a must.
